Statement and Aims
“We are passionate about Art and Design and thrive on sharing this with our pupils.”
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. We aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design. As pupils progress, we help them to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and the wealth of our nation and the wider world.
We have a practical approach to our subject which aims to build sound subject knowledge in a variety of media. We aim to help each pupil develop as an individual with the skills and confidence to explore their own unique imagination and creativity.
Our staff have specialist knowledge and experience in a wide range of different subject areas including Fine Art- Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media and Sculpture, Jewelry and Theatre/Production Design, Costume /Prop Making and Special Effects. This is reflected in the broad range of experiences that we aim to provide for our pupils from Year 7 through to GCSE.
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, 3D design and other art techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
‘The arts are a way of learning, of exploring, of responding, of revealing and demonstrating, of imagining, depicting, and making meaning. They belong in the school curriculum, as they belong in the minds and hearts of all lifelong learners.’
David Booth-Teacher
